Come hear a Curator’s Perspective on RENEWAL before the exhibition closes.
The exhibition Renewal, at the Luther W. Brady Art Gallery, has been extended to Saturday, December 10.
On December 1 from noon to 1, curator Olivia Kohler-Maga will lead a tour of the exhibition, discussing the challenges of restoring a legendary artwork and creating a cohesive exhibit of work to display alongside it. Some of the 23 participating artists will also be present to discuss their work.
At the center of the show is the sculpture Ghost Dance by famed sculptor Robert Stackhouse. Creating Ghost Dance played a pivotal role in Stackhouse’s development as an artist; but the large-scale piece, originally created for an exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery was dismantled and has been in storage for many years. This year, Stackhouse and his partner Carol Mickett, with help from Corcoran School curators, reassembled and restored the work in order to display it. They also invited artists from the Washington Sculptors Group to submit pieces addressing the themes of renewal and reuse, responding to Stackhouse’s work. The result is a show of art works of varied media in conversation with one another.
If you haven’t been to the Corcoran Flagg Building since George Washington University finished restoring it, this is a good chance to visit a beloved structure – as well as getting a mid-day break from your office, home, or home office for art.
Juried by Olivia Kohler-Maga, Luther W. Brady Art Gallery, and Babette Pendleton, Corcoran School of the Arts & Design, the exhibition has been organized in conjunction with the Washington Sculptors Group and funded by the Friends of the Luther W. Brady Art Gallery and the Director’s Discretionary Fund.
