ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Fleeting, Fled is an exhibition about the temporal that is open to many possibilities. The cycle of life, death and rebirth is the underlying theme. Occurring during the Spring season in Washington, artwork could be inspired by the ephemeral beauty of the cherry blossoms and daffodils that will be in bloom. Environmental themes might also relate to climate change or the climate crisis. The opportunity to halt rising global temperatures is fleeting, or has the window for evoking remediation already closed? The setting of Glen Echo Park, one of our national parks might also be inspirational. The indoor and outdoor setting allows for a wide range of media, including ephemeral outdoor works. The juror welcomes a broad interpretation of this theme, personal or political.

ABOUT THE JUROR
Laura Roulet is an independent curator and writer, specializing in contemporary and Latin American art. She was one of five international curators chosen for the initial 5×5, a major public art initiative in Washington DC. Her recent exhibitions include “Landscape in an Eroded Field,” “Ian Jehle, Dynamical Systems,” and “Foon Sham: Escape” (American University Museum, Katzen Center); “A Dark and Scandalous Rockfall” (Mexican Cultural Institute); “Brian Michael Reed, In the Crosscurrent” (Huntington Museum of Art, WV); and the “National Drawing Invitational” (Arkansas Arts Center, Little Rock, AR). International exhibits include the OAS Art Museum of the Americas as well as exhibits in Mexico City and Puerto Rico. She was a mentoring curator at the D.C. Arts Center and the first mentoring curator at VisArts in Rockville, MD. She is a regular contributor to Sculpture magazine. Her catalogue essay “Aglutinación: The Collective Spirit of Puerto Rican Art” is included in Relational Undercurrents, Pacific Standard Time LA/LA. Her other publications include many catalogue essays, articles in American Art, Art Journal, and Art Nexus, and the book Contemporary Puerto Rican Installation Art: the Guagua Aerea, the Trojan Horse and the Termite. She worked on the Ana Mendieta retrospective at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in 2004, and contributed to that catalogue.
