ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

The Ise Grand Shrine in Ise, Japan has been completely rebuilt every 20 years since the 700s. This major undertaking is in practice with the Shinto values of renewal and impermanence. The regular rebuilding is also a way of passing on ancient techniques and knowledge to a new generation of artists.  The Luther W. Brady Art Gallery at the George Washington University is undertaking the repair and installation of the large-scale sculpture Ghost Dance by the artist Robert Stackhouse. Selected from the Corcoran Collection, this work will be renewed by the artist and his partner, Carol Mickett, in situ and it will form the jumping off point for an exhibition of sculptural works that celebrate similar themes of renewal, rebirth, and sustainability explored in this work.  Ghost Dance pays tribute to its namesake 19th century movement based on visions of a restoration of western land to the American Indians and a renewal of the earth. The primary material used to create the sculpture is an industrial-grade wood that was recycled for this artistic purpose, a nod to the environmentally-focused, immersive, and performance-based works that Stackhouse now creates with Mickett.

Artists are invited to submit existing or new sculptures and installations that fit the themes of renewal, reuse, repair, sustainability, recycling/upcycling, impermanence/change, environmental awareness, and other related themes. Works will be judged on how well they fit the theme and how suitable they are for the available space, as well as how all selected works come together for a cohesive exhibition.

ABOUT THE JURORS

Olivia Kohler-Maga oversees the Luther W. Brady Art Gallery where she regularly organizes exhibitions such as What Not to Wear: Women Sculptors, which focused on contemporary women sculptors who work from clothing forms or with clothing; After Melville and Whitman: Contemporary Responses to the Civil War; Seen in Foggy Bottom: Selections from the GW Permanent Collection & Alumni Works of Artwhere paintings, prints, photographs, and drawings by alumni artists depicted various sites on campus and gave a personal view of GW. Recently she co-curated Absence/Presence: Selected Contemporary Photography, which examined how the presence of people could be identified in scenes that were devoid of people. Other projects include the online catalogue for Art=Text=Art, a traveling and evolving exhibition drawn from the collection of Wynn Kramansky.

Experimentation, intentionality, and collaboration are central aspects of Babette Pendleton’s multidisciplinary work as an artist, curator-producer, and researcher. Her national and international curatorial work manifests in forms of collective and collaborative organizing, project management, visionary and strategic consulting, and exhibition/performance producing. Babette is the director of Yellow Fish, a durational performance art festival which aims to bring awareness to the significance and study of time through cultural practices and artistic mediums, while facilitating community involvement in historical and contemporary thought surrounding Durational Performance. Notable past work includes, director and founder of the Pendleton House—a twenty-five person interdisciplinary art collective; director of the experimental gallery space, New Tomorrow; and producer and project Manager for Sarah Cameron Sunde’s global series, A Durational Performance with the Sea. She most recently worked as a consultant with Robert W. Deutsch Foundation in Baltimore, MD and Coffey Street in Brooklyn, NY. Her current research focuses on reconfiguring contractual agreements inside collecting and commissioning initiatives with specific emphasis on putting care practice and performance methodologies at the forefront of contract law.

Babette holds a BFA in Dance & Choreography from Cornish College of the Arts, and an MFA in Curatorial Practice from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) with a minor in Critical Theory. She is the current exhibition and programming associate at George Washington’s Corcoran School of Art & Design in DC.
